Avocados Australia is a not-for-profit organisation that represents the Australian avocado industry from orchard to consumer. The Australian avocado industry supplies high-quality fruit to domestic and international markets. In 2024, the industry produced approximately 150,000 tonnes of avocados, with strong domestic demand and growing export opportunities.

The organisation strives for continual improvement and provides strategic leadership, advocacy, research, and market development programs to support growers and the broader supply chain. As part of this continual improvement, they work closely with Hort Innovation to ensure the industry levy funded Research and Development and Marketing programs for the Australian avocado industry are well directed, achieve the best outcomes possible and responsive to industry needs.

Guided by the 2022–2026 Strategic Plan, AAL focuses on four key industry priorities:
  1. Increase domestic consumption.
  2. Grow export volumes at profitable farm gate prices.
  3. Improve industry productivity and quality to increase global competitiveness.
  4. Optimise the operating environment to support a sustainable and profitable industry.
The Opportunity

As a key horticulture sector that is closely aligned to Hort Innovation, AAL is looking for a highly skilled and passionate person skilled in driving project outcomes.

This position is a new role for Australian Avocados Limited and in conjunction with the CEO, will make AAL a valuable contributor to the Australian Avocado industry.  Some of the key responsibilities include.
  • Working closely with the CEO and Hort Innovation to drive growth in the sector
  • Management of project budgets and reporting requirements for each project including ongoing assessment of current projects for continual improvement
  • Working with a high performing team to ensure efficient management of levy projects
  • Driving the proposal process within the organisation, meeting existing timeframes and future deadlines
  • Overall management of the team (10) across marketing, finance, administration, export, strategy and data departments
  • Build relationships with growers across the country, ensuring the team is a support to both growers and the broader industry
  • Maintain a close connection to the avocado industry, ensuring awareness of Research and Development activity across the sector
  • Maintenance and regular review of the risk management framework
  • Management of all Human Resources related functions such as policies, recruitment, contracts and performance
About You

AAL works across all parts of the supply chain, from production through to the consumer. They deliver several core programs focused on strategic industry priorities so you will have ownership across key areas of the business such as marketing, communication, biosecurity, export and R&D. 
Other key qualities we are seeking include the following:
  • The ability to develop and execute strategic and operational plans aligned with the Board and CEOs vision
  • An innovative thinker, who can introduce ideas that will support increased productivity, profitability and competitiveness of the sector
  • Project management experience, ideally gained from agriculture/horticulture industry, with a strong focus on achieving set milestones
  • A proven ability to lead and develop people, creating an informed, culturally aligned and effective team
  • A proven communicator, who enjoys interacting with growers to understand the needs of the sector
An in depth understanding of Hort Innovation and the R&D Levy system will be highly regarded.

Reporting to the CEO, who will be focussed heavily on strategically representing AAL across Australia and abroad, your focus will be leading the AAL team internally, managing crucial strategic projects on behalf of industry.
