The Company
Rice Breeding Australia Ltd (RBA) is a not-for-profit company established to strengthen rice breeding outcomes for the Australian rice industry. RBA provides commercial focus and coordination to ensure rice breeding contributes to improved water productivity and the long-term viability of Australian rice production. The members of the company are AgriFutures Australia, SunRice and the Rice Growers Association.

The Opportunity
This Technical Officer role provides hands-on operational support to the Rice Breeder and technical team across field trials, glasshouse activities, and off-season sample processing.

The position is strongly practical and suits someone who enjoys outdoor work, machinery, and physical tasks rather than laboratory-based research.

You will also be directly involved in:
  • Establishing, maintaining, and harvesting field trials
  • Operating and assisting with agricultural machinery and equipment
  • Plant sampling, data collection, and accurate record-keeping
  • Processing grain and plant samples during the off-season (milling, preparation, handling)
  • Supporting trial implementation and day-to-day operational activities
  • Working outdoors in varying seasonal conditions
  • Collaborating with a small, close-knit technical team to meet timelines
About You
You are practical, reliable, and comfortable with physically demanding outdoor work. You enjoy hands-on tasks and take pride in doing operational work accurately and safely.

This role would suit candidates from farming, rural operations, machinery, irrigation, or applied agriculture backgrounds. The position emphasises practical implementation rather than academic research.

Essential Requirements
  • Practical experience in agriculture, field operations, or machinery use
  • Exposure to crop production and field trials
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of outdoor work
  • Valid Australian driver’s licence
  • Willingness to travel regionally as required
Desirable
  • Qualification in Agricultural Science or a related discipline
Why this Role?
  • Direct exposure to an applied national breeding program
  • On-the-job training and development with experienced breeders
  • Opportunity to build skills in applied crop production and research support
