    CSIRO is Australia’s national science agency, solving the greatest challenges through innovation, science and technology. Their research farms are located throughout Australia, helping them to deliver science-based solutions to the cropping, livestock and aquaculture industries.

    The Boorowa Agricultural Research Station, operated by CSIRO, is a state-of-the-art temperate, mixed farming agricultural research facility in southern NSW. On 290 Ha, they are focused on developing Australian farms of the future, involved in testing emerging technologies across crop science, agronomy and farming systems whilst working sustainably and in line with best practice. Specific site research includes monitoring soil health, long term farming systems, and focusing on digital agriculture to enhance research and provide data driven insights. There is a segregated GM field trial facility.

    This large well laid out site is pristinely presented, being the flagship of the national research stations, so frequently visited & utilized by clients. The still relatively new facilities include plant & soil processing and storage areas, cool and cold rooms, highly organized machinery and equipment shed, workshop, shearing sheds, yards, modern open plan offices and spacious meeting/ presentation room.

    The Position

    Reporting to the Research Support Manager, Cropping Research Stations, an onsite Research Station Manager is required to manage the day-to-day farm operations of the facility and field activities, ensuring it is research ready to provide support for scientific research.

    This hands-on role involves liaising primarily with internal CSIRO research partners (Canberra based) to determine their needs, then working with them to deliver the field trial service and support activities to achieve consistent quality outcomes, whilst adhering to all compliance requirements. The process is consultative, dependable, with a big focus on Health Safety and the Environment.

    You will be leading a small team of well-trained, high performing field technicians to maximize the site capability for research. As part of the farming committee of national senior researchers, you will be involved in driving direction and strategy.

    The Person

    To be successful in this role you will need:
    • People management and team leadership experience with proven leadership and collaboration skills
    • Experience managing agricultural field research cropping and/or livestock trials
    • Ability to operate farm machinery (tractors, seeders, sprayers, harvesters)
    • Up to date knowledge and experience in Digital Ag Technology (GPS guidance, field sensors, data and drones)
    • Bachelor’s degree in agricultural science and/or equivalent relevant work experience in agricultural field research
    Under CSIRO policy, applications are open to Australian/ New Zealand citizens and Australian Permanent Residents. Full time is preferred, however willing to consider other arrangements.

    Focusing on work/life balance, the role offers flexible working arrangements around the 38 hour week, with limited weekend work. Superannuation is a generous 15.4%.

    Regarding location, you can be based in Boorowa itself, or the nearby towns of Young or Yass ensuring a short 30 min drive to the facility. Relocation assistance is available for the successful candidate.

    You may be an experienced researcher, comfortable with the science but now chasing more flexibility, or perhaps from a private contract research organization seeking another challenge in a different environment to help coordinate utilizing this high class government facility.
